For generations, the Adirondacks have been part of our family's story. From childhood summers filled with cousins, campfires and music to the generations gathering here today, Harts Content has always been a place that brings our family together.
The story of Harts Content reaches back to the early 1900s, when the original structure is believed to have been built as an ice house on the shore of Fourth Lake.
Large blocks of ice were cut from frozen Adirondack lakes and stored in ice houses before being transported by train to New York City, where natural ice helped keep food cold in the days before modern refrigeration.
By the mid-1900s, the building had been converted into an Adirondack camp. Local residents have told us that as many as 12 camps once stood on the property, including a bunkhouse built over an archway at the end of what is now our driveway.

The Hart family’s connection to the Adirondacks stretches back generations. Long before Harts Content became part of our story, our family camped throughout Old Forge, Inlet, Eighth Lake and Raquette Lake. Tent camping, campfires, cousins and days spent exploring the woods and lakes created a love for the Adirondacks that has carried through generations.
In the late 1970s, our great-uncle Howard Hart and his wife, Bea, purchased the Fourth Lake property, which at the time included two remaining side-by-side camps. That purchase gave our family a permanent place on the lake and began a new chapter in a tradition that continues today.

Our connection to Uncle Howard was especially meaningful. He was our grandfather Jack Hart’s brother, and after our grandfather passed away while our mother, Linda, and her four brothers were still young, Uncle Howard stepped into an important parental role in their lives. Our mother shared an especially close bond with him, and he loved her like a daughter.
Because of that relationship, Harts Content became much more than a summer camp to our family. Our mom and dad, Linda and Frank, along with David and me, spent many summers here with Uncle Howard and Bea, creating memories on Fourth Lake that have stayed with us throughout our lives.
Today, Harts Content remains what it has always been for our family: a place to gather, reconnect, and share our love of the Adirondacks. Now, as another generation begins making memories here, we look forward to carrying the Hart family tradition forward and keeping Harts Content in our family for generations to come.
